We had a lovely first day. A Christian Palestinian lady named Henrietta guided us around. She took us to Herodion which was Herod's palace. This was the Herod who was alive when Jesus was born. His tomb was found in 2005! The palace is built into a high hill. We had a great view of the surrounding countryside. We also visited the shepherds' field and the church of the nativity. None of this affected me very much.
We had a chance to visit a family in a Palestinian home in Bethlehem. While drinking Turkish coffee we had a great conversation about the lives of Palestinians in the West Bank (where Bethlehem is). Everywhere there are signs of restriction. Walls, barbed wire , etc. There is a form of Apartheid going on here. We also drove past three refugee camps for displaced Palestinians.
All the people we meet are friendly and helpful. But everything is a bit run down, including where we are staying. Tourism is the main source of income but tourists are generally staying away. However, we feel very safe, apart from very aggressive drivers!
All SO interesting, Chris and Diane....what a different world there. Thankful it is safe for you both and that you are enjoying your adventure. Sure it will be interesting when you read your Bibles to know you have been in Israel!
ReplyDeleteThat spiral tunnel going down looks very interesting. What does it lead to? Have a great day today!
ReplyDeleteI am glad you had the opportunity to speak to a Palestinian woman to get her perspective of the political situation there. Last year I went to a meeting with Jeff Halper who works for the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions. He talked about how the Palestinians living in Israel were displaced and frustrated with the way they were treated. It's all so complicated but part of your journey there. Keep safe.
